It was an April Fool from YouTube, that you could elect to watch videos in Text-Only mode and it would save them money.
You could actually watch any video in text only by adding a certain tag to the URL…
Also, this one is quite cool.

If I remember right, there’s a server you can telnet into for the whole of Star Wars as ASCII art. Also, I think output as coloured text is a vlc filter somewhere.
