Almost all of the suggested replacements so far have been really quite silly. The next Doctor is almost certainly going to be a lower profile or up and coming actor rather than an established star who could make more money elsewhere…

In a commentary from 2009 on a stills gallery for The Thick of It, Armando Iannucci and some of the cast jokingly refer to Peter Capaldi as the “next Doctor”.
